US Department of Defense plans to use portable diagnostic tools to detect traumatic brain injury

Release date: 2015-08-04

According to reports, the US Department of Defense is likely to use the smartphone diagnostic tool on the battlefield to conduct traumatic brain injury tests for soldiers in the near future. On its "Scientific Arms" blog, the Department of Defense is working with Brainscope, Inc. of Bethesda, Maryland, to use its FDA-approved Ahead 200 equipment.

At present, CT is generally used for the detection of traumatic brain injury, but the CT scanner is a large device and is inconvenient to transport. Therefore, on the battlefield, doctors have to go through customs to ask for obvious symptoms such as headache nausea and light sensitivity to diagnose the disease.

The Ahead 200 device is not a replacement for CT scans, but it provides a medium diagnostic basis between CT and consultation. The equipment is more portable, and it can be checked to see if it needs to be further inspected, to provide military services to the soldiers, and to determine if they need to be taken from the front line to the hospital.

The device includes a head EEG component and diagnostic software that can be connected to a smartphone. The FDA license for the device is for medical student training only.

The US Department of Defense has previously been involved in the mobile medical field for many years, but most of it is through its agency National Telemedicine and Technology Center (T2). T2 has released a biofeedback app, BioZen, which is only an Android version. It has also released more than 20 apps including emotion tracking, managing PTSD, and responding to stress with breathing training. In addition, T2 also maintains two online communities that help its users and families cope with a range of issues affecting them.
