New progress in cell research
The WHO reported that in 2010, there were 34 million surviving HIV carriers and AIDS patients worldwide, with 2.7 million new infections and 1.8 million deaths throughout the year. More than 7,000 new infections occur every day, and are prevalent throughout the world, but more than 97% are in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Africa. China's CDC estimates that as of the end of 2011, there were about 780,000 HIV-positive and AIDS patients surviving in China, with 48,000 new infections and 28,000 deaths. Scientists from the Scripps Research Institute have found ways to unite immune cells to fight HIV. This experiment shows that drug-resistant cells can quickly replace diseased cells and possibly cure HIV-infected people. The detailed research report was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The Scripps Institute's new approach has an important advantage. In this study, scientists connected antibodies to the cell surface, blocking access to the HIV-linked receptor, thereby preventing transmission. Researchers have turned this process into a "neighbor effect." Before testing whether the study was effective for HIV, the researchers first used a rhinovirus for a preliminary study, which showed that the rhinovirus could not enter the pathway and the transmission failed. The success of the experiment also provided new ideas for the development of HIV vaccine.
