Artificial intelligence systems can help predict side effects of combination drugs

The research team reported at the International Society for Computational Biology meeting in Chicago on July 10 that there are currently about 5,000 drugs on the US drug market, with about 1,000 known side effects. The system studies the possible side effects of various drug combinations, and the workload is huge, and artificial intelligence technology can greatly improve the efficiency of this work. According to the researchers, they used deep learning techniques that mimicked the work of the human brain, using currently known drugs and side effects as basic data, based on the interaction of proteins in the human body and the known effects of different drugs on different human proteins. An artificial intelligence system called "tengon" is used to identify potential side effects of drug combinations. The actual verification results show that half of the 10 combined drug side effects predicted by the system have been found in the records of the medical system. For example, a hypolipidemic drug and a certain antihypertensive drug are taken at the same time, and the system predicts that the patient may have muscle inflammation. A case report from 2017 showed that a patient had severe muscle inflammation after taking these two drugs.
