Fudan scientists reveal brain regulation mechanisms of depression and sleep problems

Why is depression often associated with sleep problems? The international team led by scientists at Fudan University gives answers to this question at the level of the brain and nerve mechanism. The results of the study showed that the lateral orbitofrontal cortex, wedge leaf and dorsal prefrontal cortex and other brain regions together constitute the basis of the cranial nerve circuit of depression and sleep quality. This study is expected to revolutionize the quality of sleep in patients with depression and even revolutionize the treatment of depression.

Recently, the research team's related paper was titled "The Mechanism of Human Brain Function Linkage Modulation of the Relationship between Depression and Sleep Quality" and published in the top journal of the Mental Health Journal, Journal of the American Medical Association, Psychiatry.

According to the latest statistics of the World Health Organization, there are more than 300 million people with depression worldwide. Clinically, 70% of people with depression have sleep problems, while those with sleep problems are also significantly more likely to have depression or anxiety than those with normal sleep. The research team said that the close relationship between the two has been discovered more than 100 years ago, but the brain mechanism behind it has not been clear for a long time.

By integrating the international brain image database - the American Brain Connect Group Program and the British Biobank, the researchers analyzed data on image behaviors of nearly 10,000 subjects and found that the lateral orbitofrontal cortex of people with poor sleep quality (negative Signal synchrony (functional connection) in the brain regions such as the emotion-related brain function area, the wedge leaf (self-related brain function area), and the dorsal prefrontal cortex (short-term memory-related brain function area) is significantly increased; These neural circuits also showed a significantly elevated pattern in people with higher depression scores. It is these synchronic enhancements that modulate the relationship between depression and sleep.

In this regard, Feng Jianfeng, dean of the Institute of Brain Intelligence Science and Technology of Fudan University, explained the possibility that the connection enhancement of these brain regions may cause this group of people to be in some negative emotions for a long time, which leads to a decline in sleep quality.

“Finding a cranial nerve circuit that is associated with both depression and sleep problems means providing a new target brain area for treatment of these two psychological problems at the clinical level. By specifically stimulating these brain areas, or Will improve both depressive symptoms and sleep problems." Feng Jianfeng said. (Reporter Wu Zhendong)
