Krishna Goda and colleagues at the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Alabama at the University of Alabama, USA, examined the role of heme oxygenase-1 in tuberculosis cells and pathology using newly excised human tuberculosis lung tissue. . Flow cytometry and histopathological analysis showed that heme oxygenase-1 was mainly expressed in bone marrow cells, and the concentration level was directly proportional to cell protection. Heme oxygenase-1 reduces the pathophysiology of tuberculosis by reducing bone marrow cell-mediated oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen or nitrogen intermediates, which control granulocyte nucleus rupture to produce heme oxygenase -1 partition reaction. Using systemic or bone marrow-specific heme oxygenase-1 deficient mice, the researchers demonstrated that heme oxygenase-1 is a substance necessary to control bone marrow cell infiltration and inflammation to prevent progression of tuberculosis.
