American scientists developed medical 3D printed customizable blood vessel stents

Recently, Guillermo Ameer and Sun Cheng, two scientists from Northwestern University, have collaborated to develop biodegradable elastic stents that can be customized according to the patient's physical condition using 3D printing technology.

“The vast majority of the stents are now metal-supported, available in a variety of ready-made sizes.” Ameer said he is a professor of bioengineering at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University and a professor of surgery at Feinberg Medical School. “Doctors can only guess which stent is just the right size to keep the blood vessels open. But each of us is different, and the final result depends entirely on the experience of each doctor, so this is not the best solution.”

In these cases, the doctor must reopen the blocked stent or perform a bypass vascular graft in some way. This is an expensive and high risk process. “We are expected to minimize the probability of these complications by 3D printing with stents that meet the patient's requirements for precise geometry and biocharacteristics.”

To create these custom brackets, Ameer collaborated with Assistant Professor Sun Cheng using a 3D printing technique called projection micro-stereo-lithography, combined with an aggregation previously developed by Ameer Labs.
