Canadian scientists discover new neuroprotective factors

The University of Canada Health Network (UHN) announced that the UHN Glaucoma Research Project team has discovered a new neuroprotective factor that may help glaucoma patients avoid blindness. Related research results have been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

The team found that a lipid molecule called LXB4 protects neurons from the harmful effects of glaucoma in preclinical model experiments. This tiny lipid molecule is usually found in healthy eyes and acts as a neuroprotective signal. A healthy eye produces LXB4, and in a diseased eye, its level is reduced. Studies have shown that by restoring LXB4, damaged nerve cells can be protected from dysfunction and death.

Glaucoma is an irreversible optic nerve progressive neurodegenerative disease that eventually leads to blindness, affecting 70 million people worldwide. Although there is currently no cure, the key strategy for developing treatments for glaucoma and other neurodegenerative disorders is to find ways to maintain neuronal survival.

Researchers believe that this factor effect is not limited to glaucoma, its neuroprotective effects can extend to the central nervous system, and may be used in the treatment of many other neurodegenerative diseases.

In the future, the research team will further study the underlying mechanisms controlling molecular levels of LXB4 and design practical methods to restore their molecular levels for the treatment of disease. The researchers also plan to explore potential applications of this finding in other situations, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. (Technology Department)
