HKU announces successful development of new drugs to prevent and eliminate HIV

On April 28, the University of Hong Kong announced that its research team has developed a new type of antibody drug that protects cells from HIV infection and HIV removal and successfully experiments in mice.
The research team led by the AIDS Research Institute of the Department of Microbiology, School of Microbiology, University of Hong Kong, developed a new type of antibody drug "Tie-series Bivalent Broad-spectrum Neutralizing Antibody" (BiIA-SG) using genetic engineering technology, which effectively inhibited all tested HIV strains and promote the clearance of latently infected cells in mice.
The HKU research team pointed out that BiIA-SG can strategically ambush HIV and protect cells from infection by binding to the CD4 protein on the surface of host cells. In addition, the gene-introduced BiIA-SG can continue to function in mice and clear cells that have been infected with HIV. Therefore, this study provides a proof of concept for BiIA-SG as a novel antibody drug for HIV prevention and immunotherapy.
Compared with the current antibody drugs for the treatment of HIV, the effectiveness of new drugs has improved significantly. The research team hopes that the new drugs are expected to become the first "Made in Hong Kong" for antibody drugs for clinical treatment of HIV.
The research results have been published in the latest issue of the internationally renowned biomedical journal Clinical Research Journal.
